My work is often autobiographical in an indirect sense but always experimental or better put: experiental. By research of both the material and the idea a very personal series of short films have been made. Name it: non-narrative story telling. Sometimes found footage, archive footage and in fact whatever kind of footage is used - some would say abused - and cut-up or down with self created images and sounds. Typical is the use of 8mm film in combination with digital editing. From my film experiments I extract frames or stills, and exhibit them as independent work or in combination with my time-based work. Last few years I have made video-films with a more documentary touch. Cooperation with artists like Jaap Pieters, Mike Hoolboom and Hilary Jeffery have led to a fusion of my experimental and found-footage (super 8) film orientated style with video-documentary.

TIBETAN TUNNELS (w.i.p.)
2010/NL
A collaboration between musician-composer Hilary Jefery and artist-filmmaker Fred Pelon. This work in progress will have no ending since it never had any beginning. Bits and pieces of our mutual experience in art, meditation and life in general, are collected and intergrated in this line of work. Other artists will be invited to add or re-edit the temporary existing time-line.

JAAP PIETERS PORTRET 2 (and installation)
2009/NL/25min.
Sequel or not; that's not the question. The question is what moves Jaap Pieters? In this home video we get a glimpse of the artist's hidden life and hidden past. By means of a few selected suitcases out of his collection of 40, he entertains both filmmaker and the audience with anecdotes from previous lifes. World famous for his Super 8 single shot oeuvre, he presents himself here as a mover moving no-where!
Premiere (film and installation) at Open Ateliers Westelijke Eilanden 2009 in Eyediom Filmatelier Amsterdam.

19842009
2009/NL/10min.
25 years of filmmaking compiled into one frame made out of 25 images. A image- and soundscape made to celebrate the 25 years that have past since my very first filmexperiment; a modest propaganda-documentary attempt in Nicaragua (1984).

THE BEAT UP
2008/NL/3.20
Abstract Super 8 film inspired by The Exorcist footage.
European premiere at Super 8 Special 2008 in Zurich, Swiss.

FONTAGE

2008/NL-CAN/11'
An experimental video based on Super 8 found foot footage, archived footage, writings and feelings. A 'ping-pong' collaboration between Toronto based artist  Mike Hoolboom and filmmaker Fred Pelon in Amsterdam. It tells the story of a man’s life in episodic moments derived from super-8 home movies. The time-line travelled 11 times oversea to reach it's destination. Dutch premiere at Cinema de Balie in teaser program SHORTS!. International premiere at competition Kurzfilmtage 2008, Oberhausen, Germany; Stuttgart WAND 5, 2009 Filmfest in Germany. VIDEOEX, Zurich, Swiss, 2009.

MANTRAYANA

2007/NL/32’
A non-dialogue documentary filmed in Ladakh at a Buddhist Campus in the Indian Himalay. Devotional daily life as lived by both young boy monks in the monastery and the old aged in the one and only house for the eldery in Ladakh. The filmmaker participated in their daily routines as he was filming it. The film does not comment or translate but invites to see and hear the images and sounds from this magical place. Premiered at Nederlands Film Festival /Dutch Film Festival 2007 . Sing along with the Mantrayana monks here!. Screening at FIPA Biaritz France, 2008.

Mantrayana as described by documentary filmmaker Rogier Kappers (Lomax the Songhunter):

"...and suddenly we are in the middle of this everlasting 'Antonioni-like' shot. This documentary also has remembrance to Dutch filmmaker Johan van der Keuken; poetic, sensitive and personal"

KARANIYA METTA SUTTA
5’/2006: Live performance and filmed translation in sign language of 2500 year old Buddhist text on Metta or Loving Kindness.
Performed with live chanting at Grote Kerk in The Hague during the official start of 'Prinsjesdag' 2006, opening of the Dutch parliamentary year.Take a look here

JAAP PIETERS PORTRAIT
45’/ 2006: Video portret of Amsterdam based Super 8 filmmaker and photographer. The "Eye of Amsterdam" captured at his household, being a living spectacle of gliding staples, a moving (and moving) struggle with his "things" a symbol for his inner-life. Organizing, controling and re-collecting the chaos by means of photography becomes treasure hunting and finding. The filmmaker joins Jaap Pieters in the search for his heater but becomes part of his collection. Premiered at Filmfestival Rotterdam 2006 in the Starting From Scratch program.Part of a FILMBANK tour in the Netherlands in 2006 named: 3 HOOG Jaap Pieters portretten. Recent screenings: Metrostation Wibautstraat at De Rode Loper Festival/Galerie Inkijk and at the Dutch Film Festival, both in September 2006. Galerie Echo.Base, Antwerp, Belgium, April 2009

GODSBERG
17’/2006: Experistorical film based on found footage filmed at a Dutch nazi (NSB) meetings in the centre of the Netherlands in the years 1937 - 1940. The place now functions as a camping site with all the nazi-architecture still in place. By a thorough research the filmmaker discovers all kind of audio and printed material that, like the 8mm film he discovered, shows how common fascism actually was in Holland between 1933 and 1945. He traveled to the site and spent some time in a trailerhome opposite of the monumental wall. His film shows a mixture of past and present, with a personal touch. Premiered at Filmfestival Rotterdam 2006. Was screened in Cinema de Balie in Amsterdam during Starting From Scratch. Was presented at the 2006 Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen in Germany as part of the International Competition and at The Chicago Underground Filmfestival 2006. Also at Recontres Internationales in Berlin, Germany, 2007 and  at the Media Art Festival 2007 in Fryslan and Groningen. At 4th Fair of Culture in Zagreb, Croatia 2008.

BRAINFRAMES
6’/2005: This work is bases upon a special soundtrack, one with healing effects if listened to in a stereo presentation. Binaural beats are a result of two different auditory impulses, originating in opposite ears, below 1000 Hz and which differ in frequency between 0 and 30 Hz. These waves or so called brainwaves, ranging from 0 to 30 Hz are not heard but perceived as an auditorial beat and can entrain specific neural rythms. Thus they become a stimulus for all kinds of altered states of mind. The visuals are supporting this auditorial effect by it's abstract but effective stimulation of that part in the brain where sight resides. Based on mold footage being feedback-ed, loop-ed and re-shot, it shows the realtime possibilities that originate from combining film and video technique.

Q
:Do you wanna reset your brains sodium/potassium ratio in Theta and stimulate your creativity?
A:Listen this film! Premiere at The Center for New Media Culture in Riga, Letland 2006. Screened at Dutch Film Festival 2006 (Utrecht) in the Centraal Museum / Re:visie program and at K!FILM FEST Antwerpen 2006;  Also at Try-Tone 2007, Zaal 100, Amsterdam.

DOORDRAAIEN
6'/2007: Super 8 film shot from my 3th floor window during hot summer of 2006. We see a girl from the flowershop getting rid of her overheated flowers and some events as a result of that. Premiered at Starting From Scratch 2007 in Cinema de Balie.

THE DUTCH ACT

2001 / NL / 24min. / Super 8 to DV/Beta/DVD/
Subject: Suicide and Internet
This experimental and partly autobiographical documentary film gives an insight in the world of the suicidal
and the very practical way Internet is used to communicate about this complex issue.
Shot entirely on 8 mm film and after one year of full-time research, The Dutch Act has become both a personal and engaged work.
The film premiered at IFFRotterdam 2001 and had many screenings since.
It was discussed in a feature article/interview publiced in the English daily 'The Independent'.
and an article/interview in French daily 'Liberation'. Also distributed by: Video Data Bank

The Dutch Actas described by Toronto based YYZ Gallery in 2003:

"This project, an experimental docu-drama filmed on super 8, explores both the politics and ambiguities of suicide.
Juxtaposing fragments of discussions from Internet suicide chat rooms with images of solitary figures in precarious situations,
the film reveals a complex and empathetic narrative of desperation paradoxically convoluted with affirmation (...)
"
Most recent screenings: Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (a.k.a) MNCARS in Madrid, Spain.
Program: Locuras Temporarias 2006. And at the 700IS Film Festival, Egilsstadir, Iceland 2007

HOELA LOOP
6’30-2004: Educational and entertaining super 8 portrait of a woman doing her daily practice in an Amsterdam backgarden.
Premiered at Starting from Scratch 2004 at Cinema Balie Amsterdam.
Screened at Crossing Border Festival in The Hague 2004.
Part of Filmbank Tour #8 Speeltuig 2005

MANTELFRAUDE MENTALFREUDE
25’–2004: A film based on the idea of parallel realities between art, psychosis and spirituality.
I invited 3 friends, experienced in psychosis and/or so-called schizophrenia,
to join me in filming with super 8 cameras their inner and outer experiences.
By starting a process of mix and re-mix of mutual experiences in image
and sound the collage became film, step by step. I made a film using these contributions and artistic feelings
in what has become a very personal statement, made by 4 people caught in between reason, madness and other states of mind.
Premiered at IFFRotterdam 2004 followed by a D-light program tour in NL.
Currently it is part of an international Filmbank program.

Mantelfraude Mentalfreude according to Canadian writer-filmmaker Mike Hoolboom:

"It shows a curious amalgam of materialist practise with nouveau doc stylings, a democracy of pictures,
Perceptual emulsions and letters from the other side, far shore of imaginations which have dreamt
too much, too often, drank one too many times from that well, and in place of drowning,
have come here to lay down these testaments on film"

MOLD BOAT
4’30-2003: One 18 minutes reel of super 8 film, shot by a participant of a cruise in the "Far-East"
was mixed with food and fungus and stored to mature in a dark place.
A strange chemical reaction took place and a new imagery was born in the process.
With the highlights of this forgotten and rotten trip and a beautifull sound track added, Mold Boat was created.
Part of D-light tour and screening at Dutch Film Festival 2004

SCREAMING LAYERS
8’30-2002: Film formats pasted on transparant 35 mm, a deframing of celluloid, a projectionists surprise:
You never see what’s between the pictures/frames that become moving pictures by the movement in the projector
until you start to mix them & by-pass the format. In this film you see all of the material and hear all of the sounds
you are normally not supposed to see or hear. The sounds reveal a new quality of the picture frame,
they pass the optical sound box and are translated into decibels. The images reveal the hidden stream and the up and down movement it makes when format and cinema techniques are not compatible. Without many words the work explains all you want to know about cinema, projection, frames and distortion.

REANIMATED A CAMERAMAN
7’- 2002: the re-shooting of a home moviemaker and my first movie with a happy start.
Rare is the moment that life and death, decay can be witnessed by home shots and the ageing of the man behind the camera.
This combination of rushes, the home moviemaker himself considered failures, and his passport pictures during 21 years,
make the viewer part of this domestic fact. "The film has a touch of sadness, of life slipping away through one’s fingers,
a fact of life itself" as it was written in the Impakt Festival Catalogue

TEMPORARY VISIONS: 2 SETS OF MUSICAL AND CINEMATOGRAPHICAL PERFORMANCE
A new project by saxophone player Esmee Olthuis , percussionist Hans Hasebos, pianist Albert van Veenendaal and filmmaker Fred Pelon. Starting point is the combination of his films and live improvised music.
The remarkable and often abstract films, using mold/fungus and scratching,
are projected behind the musicians. The films as well as the music are made with little intervention and manipulation of the idea,
with purity as the focus. The musicians improvise on partly composed music and deliver their interpretation of the visuals.
Its all about movement and rythem. Now available on DVD at your local record shop or via: olthuis@xs4all.nl
